Meet the Prosecuting Attorney

Robert A. Cooney
Mr. Cooney was elected Grand Traverse County Prosecuting Attorney in 20I2 after serving as Deputy Civil Counsel from 2005 to 2012, and as Assistant Prosecuting Attorney since 1993.
Mr. Cooney received his Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from the Detroit College of Law (Michigan State University College of Law), and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Michigan Technological University. Prior to working for Grand Traverse County, Mr. Cooney was employed as a Pre-hearing Attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals in Lansing, and earned his law degree while working full time as a Project Engineer for the US Army Tank Automotive Command in Warren, Michigan from 1987-1993.
Mr. Cooney is a member of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, the National District Attorneys Association, Fight Crime - Invest in Kids Michigan Chapter, the State Bar of Michigan, and the Grand Traverse, Antrim, Leelanau Bar Association.  Mr. Cooney serves on the Executive Board of the Traverse Area Narcotics Team, the Prosecuting Attomeys Association of Michigan Corrections Committee, and is a member of the Northwest Michigan Prisoner Reentry Steering Team.
Mr. Cooney has been a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America (2004-present); Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer (2001-2011); and the Grand Traverse Hockey Association (2004- 2008). Mr. Cooney is a member of Rotary International Traverse City Noon Club and United Methodist Church of Traverse City.  Mr. Cooney resides in Peninsula Township with his wife, Karin, three children, Katie, Jack and Maggie, and their dog, Bonnie.
